While Madrid is the national capital, Barcelona is the Catalan capital. Among other things, the city is known for the extraordinary buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí. About Spain and Barcelona
Spain is a diverse country in southwestern Europe, known for its rich history, art, and vibrant regional cultures. Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region, is a Mediterranean metropolis famed for its stunning architecture (from Gothic quarters to the modernist masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí like the Sagrada Família), world-class art museums, lively beaches, and delicious cuisine. As a major European hub of innovation and tourism, Barcelona offers the perfect mix of historic charm and modern amenities, making it an exciting and convenient study destination for GSERM participants.
Barcelona is nestled between the sea and the mountains, giving it a pleasant climate and scenic surroundings. It’s a walkable and bike-friendly city laid out on a human scale, yet boasts efficient public transportation. A comprehensive metro and bus network and frequent regional trains connect all parts of the city and suburbs.
Cultural Advice
In Barcelona and Spain in general, understanding a bit of the local culture will enrich your experience. Languages: The primary language in Barcelona is Spanish (Castellano), but you will also hear Catalan (Català) everywhere. Most locals are bilingual in Spanish and Catalan, and many people speak at least some English.
Customs: Spanish culture places importance on socializing – don’t be surprised if networking events or dinners start late in the evening. In Barcelona, people typically eat lunch around 1–3 PM and dinner around 8–10 PM or later.
